When I told my wife that being a dental hygienist was getting boring and repetitive, she gave me a long, stern stare. She then sat me down and gave me a lecture that stayed in my mind forever. Many years ago, her father had been a farmer. She had gone to school only because of the money he had earned working on his farm. Her mother had died giving birth to her, leaving her father to raise two children and keep a farm in good condition. He did the exact same things every single day. His routine never changed for twenty years, until Mary and her brother James were old enough, when he retired. I realized that later in life, if I wanted to peacefully retire after my kids get into good colleges, I needed to persist in my job regardless of how repetitive it was. I realized that dental hygiene, thought repetitive, is sometimes effortless, and doing the same things will make me better and better.

For Fifteen Years

This year I remembered that for the past fifteen years our housekeeper spent her Christmas with us. She has been with my family for exactly the same years and ever since she has been with us I can’t remember her being away from us.

So this Christmas we gave her an all expense paid trip home. I know that she is hestant to go home this Christmas since she has been spending it each year with us but it is the least we can do for everything that she has done for us.

She is like family to us already and I know we are going to miss her this Christmas but I know it is high time for her to spend the special day with her own family. Anyway, she’ll be back with us by New Year. I do wish she will enjoy her Christmas and that she is happy with our gift.
